SERMON ON THE OZARKS
A Biblical reference guide to the Netflix Original series Ozark

ABOUT THE BOOK
The Netflix original series Ozark is filled with Biblical references. Each reference explains stories from the Bible.
For example, the character Jonah is a reference to the story of the prophet Jonah.
We created a podcast and a book that invites you to explore Biblical stories while watching the show.
The design of the book is inspired by the hymnals that Ash gives to Mason's congregation.
We know this TV show is violent, but the Bible is filled with violent stories. Jesus lived among sinners.

This book is for anyone who wants to understand the stories in the Bible from a unique perspective.

We believe the best description of how the show Ozark can help you understand the Bible was given at this link here.

In Season 1 Episode 10 of Ozark, the character Ash is seen putting drugs inside a book that is called “Hymnal of the Faith.” This is how the Snells discretely sell drugs during Mason’s church services.
We thought it would be interesting to flip that idea on its head. The Bible itself can be what keeps people from recognizing its truth. The stories can feel out of date. What if you could make a book that was inspired by the show and among other things, explains the Bible with scenes from the show? You can. We did.
The look and feel of this book is inspired by a traditional bible. It is also very durable and made to last as long if not longer than the Bible you may have on your shelf today.

This book has two parts: a devotional, and a reference guide.
By a devotional we mean it helps devote you to making a commitment to think about the ethical questions in your career.
By a reference guide, we mean that you can refer to the chapters for insights about stories in the bible. You don’t have to read it cover to cover in one sitting.
You could even keep it on your coffee table as a conversation piece. But we think you will get the most value from using it daily and constantly reflecting on the questions.

The book is organized according to parables and verses from the Bible. It contains seven chapters with quotes from the Bible, and timestamps of scenes from the show that best explain the Bible verse.
When you see a Biblical reference from the show, you can find the characters’ names in the book, and the corresponding biblical story.
It also explains easter eggs, and excerpts of books from the Bible that are related to the characters (ex. The Book of Ruth, and the story of Jonah).

To begin, the definition of blasphemy is saying something concerning God that is disrespectful.
We believe that this book is not disrespecting Christianity but paying respect to it in a modern way. It invites Christians and those who do not believe in God to look at the Bible in a new light.
The bible says: “ every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a household which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” - Matthew 13:52
We believe this reference guide is an example of that. Connecting older ideas from the bible, with new examples from popular culture.
The author is a Christian and in order to identify the Bible references from the show, it took two things.
One, the culmination of years of personal study before he knew about the show, and second, he spent years collecting the material for this reference guide.
Also, the Bible is full of stories of betrayal, and murder. For example, Cain killed his brother Abel; and Jesus was put to death after Judas betrayed him for 30 pieces of silver.

This is not a Bible. We believe there is no substitute for reading the Bible, but we also recognize that there are parts of the Bible that leave people with more questions.
This is meant to help you answer those questions in a way that is unique to your own life.

Yes! This book only covers the references from Seasons 1 and 2. There are a lot more in Seasons 3 and 4.
