THE LUXURY OF TIME

Attendees will receive CPE credit

SUMMARY

When Whitney Houston went to perform the Star-Spangled Banner in the Super Bowl at age 27, the NFL had qualms about the structure of her version.

The issue was that the “meter” (or the rhythm) of the song "The Star-Spangled Banner" is written at a quicker pace than what Whitney wanted to perform. She wanted to slow the song down to add her own creativity to it.

The NFL had Houston prerecord the song and as a result the viewers watching the Superbowl on TV in 1991, hear a different version than what the crowd heard when she performed at halftime.

This is not a monumental moment in Black History. However it illustrates the core idea of expression in Black America. The tension between what we would like to express, and the structure of the platform that we need in order to express it.
